Paper piecing

Quilted wall hanging for your home decor

By Denise Russell

quilted wall hanging

Make a colorful quilted wall hanging to add a retro vibe to your home decor. Easy paper piecing and large blocks help you create this artwork in no time! "On Broadway" was just published in the January 2021 issue of the American Quilter magazine by the American Quilter's Society. I was inspired by the theaters on Broadway and love this photo setup! Lots of gold and bright colors, just as the ones we see as we walk the streets of Midtown Manhattan. The quilt measures 60" x 60" and the … [Read more...] about Quilted wall hanging for your home decor

Free quilt block pattern for a beautiful flower

By Denise Russell

Free quilt block pattern

Use this free quilt block pattern to make a flower with simple paper pieced rectangles as leaves. Repeat the block for a fun one-block wall hanging or lap quilt. Read on for the photo tutorial. [Edited: June 23, 2020] This is a 'hybrid' flower block. Why? Because the leaves are paper pieced and the flower is made with regular machine piecing. This is a perfect block for those who want to try their hand at paper (or foundation) piecing: a small part of the work is done with that … [Read more...] about Free quilt block pattern for a beautiful flower

Paper piecing video tutorial

By Denise Russell

This Paper piecing video tutorial shows the step-by-step process for making blocks with perfect points. It is so easy!     I made these paper (foundation) piecing blocks for a project that is not ready yet. When I paper piece I need to remind myself of the steps involved. This time I decided to create a video tutorial in case you also need a refresher, or for those of you who are intimidated by paper piecing. The video is short (4.11 minutes) but covers all the steps to make the block above, … [Read more...] about Paper piecing video tutorial

Paper piecing party at Thimbles & Threads

By Denise Russell

Guess what I did for... humm... about 15 hours last Friday and Saturday! I was helping Cathie at Thimbles and Threads in Draper, UT, prepare the quilt for Shop Hop which is coming up June 13. "Prepare" is the correct word, as I did not get even close to finishing ONE BLOCK!   Paper piecing is great fun when you are NOT facing a quick-approaching deadline, are NOT working on a quilt with over 100 blocks, and when each block are NOT made up of 27 tiny pieces of fabric! Since I am one of … [Read more...] about Paper piecing party at Thimbles & Threads

Paper Piecing Tutorial

By Denise Russell

This Paper-piecing tutorial is so easy to follow! With paper piecing, you can create amazing blocks or borders for your quilts! [Updated 01/08/2024] I LOVE Carol Doak's 300 Paper-Pieced Quilt Blocks (I found it here)! It has tons of wonderful blocks, and the possibilities are infinite. The book comes with a CD so you can print the blocks you like when you are ready to start your project. I usually print a few blocks, then cut and paste them onto a page so I can get as many blocks as … [Read more...] about Paper Piecing Tutorial
