Flying geese quilt block tutorial

By Denise Russell

Flying geese quilt block tutorial

Here's an easy flying geese quilt block tutorial that will save you time and fabric! Learn when to choose this one over the traditional method. Last night I was testing this block for a quilt pattern I needed to write. It finishes at 12" but the main reason to test it was because the size of the flying-geese units was not conventional, i.e., 2" x 4", 3" x 6", etc. Thus, I could not use the traditional method to construct them, as they measured 2-1/4" x 4-1/4" finished. I do use EQ8, the … [Read more...] about Flying geese quilt block tutorial

Make 8 units at a time with this easy half-square triangle tutorial. Use this formula to figure out the size of the beginning squares. No guesswork! In a few weeks, I will release a new quilt pattern that features a pieced block (above) and a block with piecing and applique'. Quilts with stars and over 50 one-block quilt patterns

By Denise Russell

Quilts with stars

I love quilts with stars, whether they are pieced, paper pieced, or appliqued. I have made them entirely with stars, such as this Christmas quilt, or mixed with alternating blocks. Here is my latest star quilt block, which is going into a sampler quilt. Two of my friends and I are making star quilt blocks which will be later turned into a quilt. We were supposed to meet every month and exchange blocks, but life is getting in the way. I did make another block, though, and I think it came out … [Read more...] about Quilts with stars and over 50 one-block quilt patterns

Quilt border ideas: a step-by-step block tutorial

By Denise Russell

quilt border ideas

I am always looking for quilt border ideas to jazz up my projects. At times, horizontal strips just won't do, right? Other times, no border is required such as in this free quilt pattern you can download. In this post, I will show you how I made the blocks to enhance a pre-printed panel. However, you can use them around blocks, too. [Edited: June 22, 2020] This is my quilt "Let's Party", just published in the Summer 2019 issue of Quilter's World Magazine. It features Maywood Studio … [Read more...] about Quilt border ideas: a step-by-step block tutorial

Free quilt block pattern for a beautiful flower

By Denise Russell

Free quilt block pattern

Use this free quilt block pattern to make a flower with simple paper pieced rectangles as leaves. Repeat the block for a fun one-block wall hanging or lap quilt. Read on for the photo tutorial. [Edited: June 23, 2020] This is a 'hybrid' flower block. Why? Because the leaves are paper pieced and the flower is made with regular machine piecing. This is a perfect block for those who want to try their hand at paper (or foundation) piecing: a small part of the work is done with that … [Read more...] about Free quilt block pattern for a beautiful flower
