Log Cabin Rings Modern Quilt

By Denise Russell Leave a Comment

This beginner-friendly Log Cabin Rings Modern Quilt is a fun twist on a traditional block. Turn the blocks this way and that, and voilà!

Happy Day! My quilt, Log Cabin Rings, was just published in the Summer 2026 issue of American Patchwork & Quilting magazine! It measures 46″ x 46,” and the blocks finish at 10″. I worked with Confetti Cottons by Riley Blake Designs and some fabrics from Blank Quilting’s Lower the Volume collection for the background. If you look closely, though, you will find a couple of prints from Moda’s Rainbow Garden collection.

I bet you have a ton of strips that might be perfect for this quilt! I used solids from a pack of 10″ squares I had. I placed the prints so they would resemble budding flowers. Yes, this quilt was inspired by Spring!

It may look intimidating, but the blocks come together fast. You will need to stitch the color and background strips together before adding them to the block, though. The instructions are detailed and easy to follow, so beginners, get ready to have some fun!

When the blocks were ready, I placed them on my design wall and turned them around until I was pleased with the design.

Log cabin blocks are so versatile! I have made so many quilts with them. In fact, that is how I began my quilting journey – by making 12 log cabin quilts! Here are some of the ones I made, including one free pattern: this one was from Flavin Glover’s “A New Look at Log Cabin Quilts”; this one is my original design, published in Annie’s Log Cabin Variations book; and this one is a free pattern.

I used leftover strips for the simple border. I wanted color around the rings, but nothing that would detract from the center. Sometimes, it is difficult not to give in to the temptation to keep adding more to a design, but I resisted!

The Log Cabin Rings Modern Quilt was designed in EQ8 (by the Electric Quilt Company). The basic design I came up with did not have the corners turned as shown above – that only happened when the blocks were made, as I said before. However, I did spend quite some time playing around with the software – I can’t help it!

I envision this quilt design with a dark background and light-colored logs… wouldn’t it be striking?

The Summer 2026 issue of American Patchwork & Quilting will hit the stands on April 17. I can’t wait to see all the other fun projects inside!

Enjoy your day,
