Log Cabin quilts as decor – easy style!

By Denise Russell

[Edited on February 4, 2020.]

My first ever quilt was a log cabin one. I have loved log cabin blocks forever and made more than a dozen quilts with them. Log Cabin quilts as home decor add an easy handmade style to any room.

I have just received a copy of Annie’s Publishing new book Log Cabin Variations and what was my surprise when I saw my quilt Natural Elegance featured on its cover! I am doing the happy dance! Log Cabin Variations presents 9 log cabin patterns where this traditional block is used in beautiful settings.

Photograph used with permission from Annie’s Publishing.

In Natural Elegance the blocks frame the machine applique’ butterflies which were inspired by the gorgeous fabrics I featured on the quilt by Timeless Treasures Fabrics: the Dutchess collection designed by Chong-a Hwang. Take a peek at some of the fabrics:

Aren’t they amazing? The blues and teals were expertly used in delicate designs in the entire collection. Yes, it is not easy cutting into all these beauties, yet the results are always worth it.

The blocks are so relaxing to make because I use the chain piecing method. I learned it from Eleanor Burns a very long time ago and that is a fast and fun way to assemble quilt blocks.

I quilted Natural Elegance on a friend’s long arm machine – I am still learning to work with it as I have always free motion quilted all my projects in my domestic machine, a Bernina. The quilting motif added an interesting texture to the background, don’t you agree?

Check out my other log cabin quilt in this book, as well as my all-time favorite log cabin wall hanging!

I usually like to use one of my log cabin quilts as home decor when I want to bring warmth to a room, or to emphasize the traditional aspects of my hobby, even though the project may have a more modern look such as this one.

Natural Elegance measures 76″ square. This log cabin quilt will work equally well on a double bed, as a lap quilt, or as a wall hanging on a large wall in a traditional or modern home. I am delighted to have it back from Annie’s. You may want to check out Log Cabin Variations which I know is available at Joann Stores and online from Annie’s Catalog.

Have a wonderful day,
