Are you ready for a fast project? I designed the Aromatherapy Quilt for Dear Stella’s Fall in Love collection. It measures 65″ x 65″ and can be used as a wall hanging for a bold decor statement or as a throw. Either way, it comes together quickly, so keep this pattern handy for those times when the occasion demands a handmade gift but time is short.

Dark and light prints added depth and movement to this modern quilt. Remember, though, depending on where the fabrics go, you may end up with four arrows pointing to the center of the quilt. If what you want is to highlight the geometric shape of the pattern, cool. I wanted a subtler design to match the collection’s theme.

As I write this, I am thinking of another quilt, Lace and Fineness, which I designed for Dear Stella fabrics a while ago, where the color placement creates a fun geometric shape.

The Fall in Love collection is so beautiful that I had to create a pattern to showcase the prints in all their glory. Thus, squares and half-square triangles combined to create a quilt whose simplicity ensures your eyes focus on fabrics first and then appreciate the design.

Beginner quilters will put Aromatherapy together without difficulty. The pattern instructions show how to assemble the 6″ half-square triangles the traditional way, so you won’t need any special tools to make them.

Florals of varied scales, directional prints, and textured basic fabrics begged me not to cut them into small pieces. However, just sewing squares together would not do. Then, I remember I could make the whole quilt look like one single block, and I love the result.

The print on the right, above, reads like a stripe to me, so I used it as a narrow border to frame the project, along with the dark binding. You know how I like to place stripes in narrow borders!

How I placed the fabrics at the center of the quilt helped determine the final design. Notice how I repeated the fabrics for maximum contrast in fabric color and scale.

The negative space in this free beginner quilt pattern is perfect to showcase your free-motion quilting skills. For a more dramatic effect, the background can also be very dark. The black print would not touch it, and that would work well. One pattern, many possibilities! To continue the modern vibe, use a simple quilting motif.

The Fall in Love collection is brightening my day, as the sky is so gray. I hope it adds color to your day, too!
