Download this Free Panel Quilt Pattern with Flying Geese. We always need ideas for quick projects, and this one is super fast!

I designed Ladies Love Flowers for the Love Bugs collection by Janet Nesbitt for Henry Glass Fabrics. It measures 53″ x 53,” and the blocks finish at 6″. The ladybug blocks on the corners are fused and machine appliqué. The fabric pieces are easy to manage, so you will whip them up quickly.
As always, I worked with The Electric Quilt Company’s EQ8 software to create this project. Once I get an idea for a quilt, I can audition blocks, fabrics, and layouts to my heart’s content. Can’t work without it.
The colors in the Love Bugs collection are romantic and soft, reminding me of a calm day spent puttering around the garden. The amazing textures and varied scale of the prints are a quilt designer’s dream! Janet Nesbitt is a veteran fabric designer, so she knows what to include in her collections to help us make gorgeous projects. I am sure you’ve made quilts with her darling fabrics!
This collection is already in stores – let’s rush to replenish our fabric stash. We will be glad we did.

In this quilt, you will make two variations of a single block, then alternate them to form the borders. Notice how they are oriented to point your eyes to the panel! The background is from Janet’s Linen Closet collection – White Wash. These basics are fantastic for both traditional and modern quilts.
Flying geese are very versatile and can add surprising effects to quilts – borders and centers. Click here for other quilt ideas (free patterns!) using flying geese blocks.
The negative space helps keep things calm around the center, so your eyes will focus on the artwork in the panel – the only goal when making quilts with panels, correct?
Speaking of making quilts with panels, I go into minute detail when I speak at guilds about how I design them. If you would like to use up all the panels with amazing artwork you purchased, but do not know what to do with them, suggest that your guild contact me, and I will be glad to walk you through it. Check out the details about my presentation by clicking here. My schedule still has some availability for 2026 (in person and via Zoom), and I am already booking for 2027 events. But I digress!

I love this ladybug block! As you can see, easy piecing and four pieces to fuse and appliqué. You can finish the block with monofilament thread and tiny zigzag stitches, though I am partial to the blanket stitch on my Bernina with matching threads.
The fabrics are lovely, so I opted to feature two on each ladybug wing. I did flip the placement of the wings so the darker fabric would be on the left side of the quilt, then on the right side. Because, why not?

This Free Panel Quilt Pattern with Flying Geese turned out beautifully. It is a cool way to get you started in your quilting journey if you are a beginner, or to whip up a fast, handmade gift. Let me know how you like it!
