By now, you must have all your summer quilts done, so here are two projects for Halloween. I designed them for the whimsical collection Cat House by Mayo Moreno for Henry Glass Fabrics. Toadstools galore!
The first one is Meow Neighborhood. It measures 52″ x 60″ and features a super-cute panel surrounded by my favorite prints from the collection. Bugs, brooms, candy corn, funny pumpkins, and leaves – all depicted with gorgeous colors and humorous character!
Cats are the proud residents of the toadstool neighborhood. If you follow me on Instagram and Facebook (@piecedbrain), you know I have a love-hate relationship with mushrooms due to Toby’s penchant for eating them, be they toxic, poisonous, or harmless. HOWEVER, there is only love for the mushrooms in this artwork!
I love the colors, the shapes, and the facial expressions of the pumpkins. This is a must-make project!

Fun not Fright is the second of the Halloween and Cats free patterns you can download. It measures 63″ x 77″ and the finished block size is 13″. This pattern is also great for beginners because the blocks involve simple piecing without complicated assembly techniques.

Since I loved the prints so much, I had to find a way to display them in all their glory. Tiny pieces would not have worked for me! I used the diagonal-striped fabric – with pumpkins, cats, brooms, and hats – for the sashing and binding for added texture, and silver from the Folio Basics collection all around the squares to provide a resting place for the eyes.
Don’t forget this tip for when you have prints you love and do not want to hide in small parts of quilt blocks: select the simplest blocks you know where the components are large enough to showcase what you like. A quilt does not have to be intricate to delight the eyes.
What about those ghosts? You understand now why I chose a simple block design, right?

And… I had to include a pumpkin block. Stitch-and-Flip and a half-square triangle are all the things you need to know to make it. It was a fun disruption of the quilt design and a way to celebrate this iconic part of Halloween.
The brooms on this print are exactly the type I would be flying if I were (ahem) a witch, because even that I would not be able to get straight. Mayo Moreno was inspired while designing this collection!

Stay cool and sew on!
