This is one of the first quilts I designed. The birds were machine appliqued, and so were the flowers in the middle of the quilt. My sister loved it when she saw it, so I gave it to her. I am pretty sure by now she must be wishing I would acquire a different hobby, or that I would adopt another sister, as I have given her so many of my quilts!!! But, another hobby would have to include fabrics... … [Read more...] about Fall birds

Chicken quilts
I am getting hooked on chicken-themed quilts! Although I have not made any for me, I made two for my sister: the first one ended up at the home of one of her friends who would not let go of it once she saw it. Then, I decided to make another one just like the first, so Miriam, my sister, would finally have her chicken quilt. Well, I liked it so much I will have to make one for me. I have been saving fabrics... You must have seen a similar quilt before, as the pattern is quite popular: Its … [Read more...] about Chicken quilts
Soraia’s flannel quilt
This is the flannel quilt I made for my niece, Soraia. The original pattern was 70"x70", but I turned it into a twin size quilt. The pattern is Puzzle Box by Tracey Brookshier. This pattern is ideal for showcasing a favorite fabric, and perfect for flannels. In fact, this is the second pattern by Tracey that I've done. The first one was Shoji (if only I had a picture of it... I never took pictures of my quilts before I gifted them to family and friends.): Isn't it a fun pattern? I used … [Read more...] about Soraia’s flannel quilt
Flannel Quilt
The weather was very cold last night for the first time this month, and I started thinking again about working with flannels. Then, my sister surprised me today with pictures of quilts I made for her and her family. Among the pictures, was this flannel one I made for her 16-year-old daughter, Amanda. As I mentioned before, when working with flannels I prefer to use less complicated blocks. The quilting is simple as well, to maintain the soft hand of the project. This pattern is found in … [Read more...] about Flannel Quilt
Winter Wonderland
(I tried four times, still not a good picture!) I have another block completed for the Winter Wonderland Crabapple Hill quilt... I know I am not going slowly - I am crawling with this one - but I guess it is a labor of love, right? At this pace, this quilt will take a few years to finish!!! My friend Celeste finished hers in one year, Roxanne in three. Anywhere in between will suit me fine. Traditionally, monochromatic embroidery work is done in red, blue, green or black. Mrs. … [Read more...] about Winter Wonderland
Machine quilting – thin or thick needles?
This weekend I started quilting my garden quilt, the one made up of 27 blocks we exchanged in our quilt guild last December. I decided to use monofilament thread (polyester), as there are a variety of background fabrics and colors, and the quilting would not compete with the beautiful blocks. I was frustrated when I noticed I only had large quilting needles! I have quilted my projects on my Bernina 440QE for the past 7 years without ever worrying about the size of needle I was using. I've used … [Read more...] about Machine quilting – thin or thick needles?
