All photographs by Brent Kane for Martingale. Used by permission. I began the day today by looking through this book for quilting inspiration: 12-Pack Quilts: Simple Quilts that Start with 12 Fat Quarters, by Barbara Groves and Mary Jacobson. Scrappy quilts have captured my imagination for the past few years, and the 12 fresh designs in this book make me glad I started on this journey. Caught in the Middle, page 16. Not all scrappy quilts work, though. Choosing fabrics for them can be … [Read more...] about More scrappy quilts

Scrappy Nine Patches
This beauty will be the newest quilt for my bed! This is only the quilt center as I am still thinking about what the borders will look like. It will be replacing the warm and cozy flannel quilt come Spring. I have been waiting for a week and no sunny day to photograph it outside... I am loving these colors! They remind me of the backroom in a house my father-in-law used to own in Bethany Beach, DE: everything was decorated in blues, yellows, and white in that welcoming room. When I opened an … [Read more...] about Scrappy Nine Patches
19-Century Patchwork
I am totally smitten by this book I just received from Martingale for review! As I was looking through 19th-Century Patchwork Divas' Treasure of Quilts by Betsy Chutchian and Carol Staehle, one word kept coming back to my mind - fantastic! Although I have only made one quilt to date using 1800s reproduction fabrics, what I loved the most about this book was that the authors presented three different setting options (actual quilts) for each of the 10 patterns. Betsy and Carol were able … [Read more...] about 19-Century Patchwork
Neutral quilt
This is Headed North, my new pattern available at Quilterly on Etsy. I love the fabrics featured on this photo: the collection is Dear Stella Adventure Awaits by Timeless Treasures. However, look at this color variation: These four blocks were so easy to make! Each block took me under 10 minutes to complete! I think a colorful version of this pattern looks just as cool, and I am thinking scrappy, too. Just make sure that you have good contrast between those two fabrics - on the photo above: … [Read more...] about Neutral quilt
Nine Patch Quilts
My quilting voyage of the past decade is marked by some distinct phases when I would make many quilts of a particular type. Here are the phases (and I have many books supporting each one): - Beginner, when I carried with me the fabric requirements for the same log cabin quilt, and everywhere I went I bought fabrics for those (12!) quilts I ended up making; - Floral with gold phase; - Fabric folding flowers; - Machine applique' phase; - Quilts using only fabrics from the same collection; - … [Read more...] about Nine Patch Quilts
Scrappy Table Topper
This summer I showed you many projects I made with fabric scraps. This is my latest one and I am loving it! I used leftover fabrics from this darling quilt... ... called Wash Day, which I have not quilted yet (ai, ai, ai...). I had been saving what I had left of all those fat quarters and realized that they would work well in a very scrappy quilt. Here it is on my design wall, in a different orientation. I used leftover blocks, extra white fabric, and made small size flying geese so they … [Read more...] about Scrappy Table Topper
