This Paper-piecing tutorial is so easy to follow! With paper piecing, you can create amazing blocks or borders for your quilts! [Updated 01/08/2024] I LOVE Carol Doak's 300 Paper-Pieced Quilt Blocks (I found it here)! It has tons of wonderful blocks, and the possibilities are infinite. The book comes with a CD so you can print the blocks you like when you are ready to start your project. I usually print a few blocks, then cut and paste them onto a page so I can get as many blocks as … [Read more...] about Paper Piecing Tutorial

Sunbonnet Sue
What do you think I wonder about as I lay awake in the middle of the night? Yeah... my next quilt project. I love Sunbonnet Sue and am planning a wall hanging based on three books I have. I will likely use applique instead of redwork embroidery. I wonder what it would look like if I mixed ideas of two separate books - one about boys and one about girls! Here are the books which are inspiring me: Sunbonnet Sue and Scottie at Play, by Suzanne Zaruba Cirillo and The Ultimate Sunbonnet Sue … [Read more...] about Sunbonnet Sue
Quilt in a Day
Make a Quilt in a Day: Log Cabin Pattern, by Eleanor Burns, was the first quilt book I purchased, and the Log Cabin pattern as demonstrated in that book was used in the first 12 quilts I made. I followed her instructions precisely, and appreciated her invaluable tips and great pictures. The next book by Eleanor I bought was Underground Railroad Sampler, followed by Still Stripping After 25 Years, then Quick Trip Quilts, It's "El"ementary: Quilting Tips and Techniques and, finally, The … [Read more...] about Quilt in a Day
Permanent Wall Hanging
Italian mosaics are the source of inspiration for intricate, beautiful quilts. The book Bella Bella quilts: Stunning Designs from Italian Mosaics by Norah McMeeking (I found it here) is a great example of such quilts. I have at least two of them on my list of UFOs (Utterly Fun Objects!) In my case, it was the other way around. Quilts inspired this mosaic I pieced together on the back porch of my previous house. First, I designed the block. When I was satisfied, I applied grout to a … [Read more...] about Permanent Wall Hanging
Cat on quilt
As I watch Jamie, my oldest cat, sleeping and totally oblivious to the sound of my fingers on the keyboard, I imagine if someday I can portray her in one of my art quilts. She is no ordinary cat to me, although she has no particularly distinctive features. In the meantime, here is one of the cats I made a little while ago, which must be adorning a special home right now... The quilt on which he is sitting is from the book "The Best of Black Mountain Quilts" by Teri Christopherson (I found … [Read more...] about Cat on quilt
Pieced Borders
At my quilt guild this year we are working on a round robin with a medallion block. We were encouraged to research pieced borders, since we will be adding borders to each other's medallion, or center, block. The organizer of the round robin suggested a few books we might look at, with one recommendation in particular: Pieced Borders, by Judy Martin & Marsha McCloskey. It is out of print but I found it here. It is a wonderful book! It explains, in minute detail, all you need to do in order to … [Read more...] about Pieced Borders
