Hi, everyone! Here are two more blocks for the Modern Spools Sew Along using Peta Peace's pattern. No applique' blocks this time but I already have another sewing notion motif lined up. So far, here are the other blocks I made: Once we add the sashing they will look more like spools. I am loving them so far, particularly the fact that I don't need to spend too much time working on them: they are fast, and I am doing one per week (posting them every two weeks on this … [Read more...] about Modern Spools Sew Along – Blocks 7 and 8

Modern Spools Sew Along – Blocks 5 and 6
Welcome back to the Modern Spools Sew Along! This time my appliqued block features an iron! I am using motifs of things I use all the time in my sewing room as you have seen from my previous posts. You can make the motifs any size you want - mine do not take up the whole block because the background fabrics need to show a lot in my opinion. I am happy I chose 1930s fabrics as they remind me of the fabrics my grandma used to sew with as she made little dresses and other clothes for us. It has … [Read more...] about Modern Spools Sew Along – Blocks 5 and 6
Modern Spools Sew Along – Blocks 3 and 4
Here are two more blocks for the Modern Spools Sew Along (for more details click here). The pattern is by Peta Peace. I love the button jar, a simple machine applique' motif with lots of colorful buttons sewn on top of it. These blocks are 5-1/2" x 9-1/2" so they are really fast to stitch up. I am using Penny Rose Fabrics by Riley Blake Designs and the collection is called Apple Farm. The prints are super cute. How are your blocks coming along? I like making one block with applique' … [Read more...] about Modern Spools Sew Along – Blocks 3 and 4
Baby Quilts for Beginners
Look at the fun baby quilt I just finished! A friend just had her first baby and I immediately went to gather all the leftovers I had of these gorgeous fabrics from the Splish Splash collection by Gail Cadden for Timeless Treasures to make a project for the little one (Here is the quilt made with the same line). This cool pattern by Amy Hamberlin is very simple - it is your choice of fabrics which makes the design pop. The letters are already reversed and ready to be … [Read more...] about Baby Quilts for Beginners
Modern Spools Sew Along – First blocks
I made the first two blocks for the Modern Spools Sew Along so I could answer some of your questions. Here we go: 1. You need to get Peta Peace's book A Piece of Cake - Sweet and Simple Quilts from Layer Cake Squares for the Modern Spool quilt pattern. You do not need to use layer cakes, however; 2. If you do not want to get the Needle and Notions book also published by Martingale, just look on the Internet for templates of sewing notions. Even though the book is for paper piecing, I am … [Read more...] about Modern Spools Sew Along – First blocks
Make a quilted wall hanging with teapots
Wall hangings are a fun way to add pizzazz to any area of your house. It will quickly take a corner of your wall from blah to glam, while adding a touch of whimsy, too. And whimsy is what I was going for, so let me show you how to make a quilted wall hanging with teapots. [Edited June 13, 2020] This quilt reminds me of my grandmother, and I will call it "Grandma's Cupboard". I raided my stash of blue fabrics, choosing fabrics with small prints to emphasize the shape of each … [Read more...] about Make a quilted wall hanging with teapots
