I bought this beauty on Monday and just about finished reading it. What a spectacular book on applique! Simply Successful Applique by Jeanne Sullivan (I found it here) presents a comprehensive description - with very detailed photographs - of her applique method. I have not yet had the pleasure of being taught by Jeanne, although I felt as if we were in the same room as she, patiently, introduced me to her techniques. This very well written book walks you through every imaginable detail of … [Read more...] about Simply Successful Applique

Quilting with wool
I love the look of wool applique, and have made a table runner, a small wall hanging, and a pin cushion, and have a Christmas wall hanging kit waiting to be worked on. I think I will start it soon, as I have been dreaming of working with wool for quite a while. I am perhaps influenced by my friend Sandi, whose applique quilts are to die for... Until I have a chance to start working on the wall hanging, I have been reading the latest title I purchased for my quilt library: Pennies from Heaven: … [Read more...] about Quilting with wool
Our Garden Quilt
Guess what I was doing at 3:30 am this morning? Binding a quilt! Yep, lost sleep around 2:30 am and, after a while, decided it was a waste of time staying awake in bed. So, here is my finished beauty: I love it! The block I made is on the top left (strawberries). All the other blocks were made by friends from our quilt guild. Their work is amazing, and 27 of us ended up with a beautiful quilt... Blocks were done using different techniques: machine embroidery, hand applique, machine applique, … [Read more...] about Our Garden Quilt
Rose of Sharon block
Last week I purchased The Rose of Sharon Block Book by Sharon Pederson (you can find it here). What wonderful block designs! Although I had already downloaded the designs onto EQ6 a while ago, I am glad I bought the book, which features the 12 winning block designs from their EQ6 challenge, plus other 83 beautiful designs. One of the reasons I got the book was because they used batiks for the blocks. The amazing, vibrant colors from all the batiks wowed me. As I read the book (I do so, cover to … [Read more...] about Rose of Sharon block
Embroidery and Applique Inspiration
As I always quilt my projects, I own a few books with quilting designs. Looking at them, one can easily see how they could be used as patterns for embroidery and applique. Have you used any designs as such? Those with continuous line lend themselves more readily for stitchery and applique. One book in particular comes to mind, with designs so lovely I have thumbed through its pages very often for inspiration: Hari Walner's Continuous-Line Quilting Designs: 80 Patterns for Blocks, Borders, … [Read more...] about Embroidery and Applique Inspiration
Applique Group Project – II
Well, we have a small group of quilters interested in this project. Just to refresh your memory: I will start with a background fabric (a fat quarter, for instance), and will applique something on it. Then, I will send it to the next person in the group, who will look at what I have done, and will either embroider or embellish it, or will add something of her own (a flower, the sun, or anything that goes along with what I have done). It is a small addition, which can be done in about an hour at … [Read more...] about Applique Group Project – II
