Blooming Bag Tutorial

By Denise Russell

I needed a quick project to work on this weekend, and turned it into a tutorial - be prepared as I am posting many pictures to help you. This one is quick, and the possibilities for embellishment are endless. In my case, since I chose a busy pattern, I did not add any other decorations. Using free-motion quilting, I outlined the flowers and used stippling on the brown background, but you can just as easily use straight lines, too. No pockets, to keep it simple. Here is what you will … [Read more...] about Blooming Bag Tutorial

Why I love my quilt guild

By Denise Russell

The sisterhood of fabric and thread – that should be the byline of our quilt guild, Piece of Heaven! Based in Draper, Utah, we meet the first Thursday of every month and I hold that spot in my calendar sacred. I was introduced to the guild by a non-quilting neighbor in 2009, two years after we moved to Utah. Joining immediately, I attended my first meeting, participated in that year’s spring retreat, and was hooked! With 50 members, this wonderful group of women has a wide variety of interests … [Read more...] about Why I love my quilt guild

Memory Board

By Denise Russell

I love this memory board! I just wish I had used a batting with more loft, so the buttons would look nicer. Since I did not have enough of the purple ribbon, I used a white ribbon with it, which looks fine (better than in the picture!). Since this is for a girl, it is 11" x 14", and the space between the buttons is 5", big enough for pictures, notes, etc. I prefer to use canvas for memory boards, along with high loft batting, or double layer of batting. I will upload a tutorial as soon as … [Read more...] about Memory Board

Log Cabin with a twist

By Denise Russell

This block is one of four needed to complete a wall hanging called Cosmos, designed by George Siciliano. It is a wonderful twist on the log cabin block. Once you get the hang of it, it comes together fast. Fabrics are sewn onto a special foundation paper. I took a one-day class with George and Virginia Siciliano last September in Provo, UT, during the Utah Quilt Guild show. They are awesome (and fun) teachers! I usually finish all work I learn in classes, and this is the one I am yet to … [Read more...] about Log Cabin with a twist

Liebster Blog Award

By Denise Russell

A warm Thank You to Leigh and Jeanette from Crafty in Crosby for nominating me for the Liebster Blog Award! I just learned that "the Liebster Award is given to up and coming bloggers with less the 200 followers. Liebster is German and means sweetest, kindest, nicest, dearest, beloved, lovely, kind, pleasant, valued, cute, endearing, and welcome." I am so happy that Jeanette thought of me and my blog for this award! It looks like I'm supposed to share with you 5 random facts about … [Read more...] about Liebster Blog Award

Wool quilt kit

By Denise Russell

This is one of my favorite wall hangings, and I look at it every time I walk into my studio. I purchased this kit from Rachel T. Pellman from Rachel's of Greenfield (you can find here other kits here), when I met her at a quilt show a few moons ago. Isn't it gorgeous? The pattern is called Wooly Sheep and it measures 13"x15". The kit included all fabrics for the applique, background, back, and binding, batting, buttons, pattern, and templates. It was a breeze to put together. The pattern was … [Read more...] about Wool quilt kit
