Are you looking to make sewing gifts for Mother’s Day? Check out these ideas which you may want to make for yourself and friends, too. They are easy and fast to make – they will be ready way before Sunday!
This Drawstring Sewing Pouch is perfect for handwork projects. It will hold needles, buttons, thread, pins, and other trims you need. It has eight pockets and a pincushion large enough for all your pins. The bottom is flat and stable – the pouch won’t wobble as you are trying to find or stow away supplies.
I have a few of them so when I feel like working on a project, all I need is conveniently stored in one small package. The pattern is super easy to follow. You will only need a couple of fat quarters and four squares of coordinating fabrics. I love selecting the fabrics for each one.
If you do not feel like making one, but still think your mother or friend would love one, I have two listed in my Etsy store, for your convenience. I also have two kits available with similar fabrics like the one in the photo above.
Speaking of my Etsy store, beginning today and until Sunday, patterns and quilts are 20% off.
As we are still wearing face masks, you may want to make a few to match some of your mother’s favorite outfits. Here is a tutorial to help you create a few of them. The elastic on these does not go behind the ears, a cool feature for those whose ears are a bit tired of managing glasses, hearing aids, earphones, and earings…
I made over 600 masks last year following this tutorial… If you prefer the elastic behind the ears, or other options to tie them, check out this blog post with other suggestions.
I have a tutorial for an easy placemat using Broderie Perse. You will need the fabric for the front and the back, another for the binding, and the flowers or other motifs you will cut from your (or your mother’s) favorite prints. The motifs are fused and raw appliqued with a straight or zig-zag stitch.
You can make a set of these placemats in one afternoon! A plain background fabric, or one that reads solid, will allow the motifs you chose to pop. Think of themes that might interest your mother: farmhouses, chickens, kitchen utensils, flowers, etc. Look into your drawer with novelty fabrics and you will be surprised at the ideas that will spring from them.
Use the same tutorial to make mug rugs – a fast gift for your mother and friends.
How about a laptop case? This tutorial will show you how I made mine. You can use batting or Soft and Stable by Annie – whichever you have on hand. If you can’t find the large ric-rack like the one I selected, any width will do. You can also trim it with a crochet edging.
Another idea – use a small orphan block and frame it to achieve the width and height of the front or back of the laptop. You do have orphan blocks, don’t you? I have so many…
Finally, perhaps the best gift will be to spend some time with her: laughing, reminiscing, helping finish a project… Our mothers did the best they could with what they had and/or knew when they were raising us. Letting go of the past and enjoying the present is healing, healthy, and honorable.
My mom is so far away from me. I was fortunate to spend two months with her in Brazil this past year-end. I call her many times per week and only talk about the good and fun things in my life because, at this stage of hers, she cannot handle bad news as her blood pressure goes through the roof. We talk for an hour at a time and often do video calls. We still exchange recipes, jokes, and other stories.
I hope these sewing gifts for Mother’s Day will help you. Have you made anything new and fun for your mother or friend? Share with me as I can still make something for her and mail it (to arrive two months after Mother’s Day… argh!).
Stay tuned as I will soon post photos of projects I have finished. I temporarily lost my writing magic but I am slowly getting it back!
