Here is a Free Panel Block Quilt Pattern to download and make right now! Easy pieced blocks make the panel squares pop!

I designed Night Watch for the Winter Whispers collection by Elsie Ess for Blank Quilting. Snowy owls, deer, bunnies, and other animals grace the woodlands in Winter and are ready to keep you warm in this quilt! Nothing spells Winter better than a forest covered with snow…
Night Watch measures 60″ x 70″ with 10″ blocks. The half-square triangles are made 8 at a time for a fast finish. If you are a beginner quilter, you will be surprised at how a complex-looking quilt can be so easy to make.

The detailed instructions show you how to work with the directional fabric so the trees face upright in every block. Stitch-and-flip makes everything so simple!
Directional fabrics can be intimidating when considering placement anywhere but on squares or borders. These blocks show a fun way to make it appear as though they were cut into triangles.
I arranged the teal and the beige prints on the pieced blocks in a diagonal fashion to frame the animal blocks. I like how the design turned out. What do you think?

Gorgeous panel! The colors are calming, the artwork is crisp, and the quilt design showcases the panel blocks perfectly (if I may say so myself!). This project is ideal for a cabin, a bedroom, or a cozy den. The animals seem to be watching us, and their look gave me the idea for the name of the quilt: Night Watch.
I loved the wintery scenes and decided to use two panels in this quilt. You can mix and match them any way you want – the result will always be lovely.
Using panel blocks in quilts can be tricky. I cover all the details of designing quilts for panels and panel blocks in my lecture and workshop, a favorite with quilt guilds. If you would like to learn how to design quilts for the panels in your stash, consider asking your guild to contact me. Zoom presentations are also available (I delivered three in the past two weeks). Click here for more details.

These are the two fabrics featured on the borders of this Free Panel Block Quilt Pattern. The one on the left would also look great on pillows! Make a set and toss them on the sofa or chairs to coordinate with the quilt.
Thanksgiving will soon be here, and we will be rushing to finish handmade gifts for Christmas. The Winter Whispers collection is already in stores: fabric + free pattern = no brainer!
Have a great week,

We are a group of quilters that make quilts only for a local children’s medical center and this looks like a spectacular quilt for them! Panels are always adorable and I like to “fuss them up” so thank you form all of us and the kids!
So glad you liked the quilt!
