The Summer has been lovely [super hot], yet I am ready for the cooler weather. The Snowy Days & Frosty Nights collection by Kathi Campbell from Heart to Hand for Studio E Fabrics transports me quickly to Winter with whimsical snowmen, flowing snowflakes, and snow-covered landscapes. I designed two projects for this collection.
Star Gazers is a quick project to add to your list of Christmas gifts. It measures 50″ x 57-1/2″ with straight borders to ensure the panel is the main focus. The prints and textures of the Snowy Days & Frosty Nights collection were all I needed to create this quilt, which can be used as a wall hanging or throw.
If you make only one Star Gazer as a gift, it is likely you will get requests to make a few more! I know my grandsons would never let me hear the end of it if I gave it to one and not the other.

I promised you could download 2 free quilt patterns, and the Winter Love Throw is the second one. It finishes at 48″ x 64″ with 10″ blocks. This quilt features blocks with regular piecing using the stitch-and-flip method, and machine applique’. Beginner quilters will have the opportunity to master the basics of the craft as they create this fun project.
In this quilt, I added the Oyster fabric from the Peppered Cottons basics collection by Studio E Fabrics to offset the top and bottom rows, emphasize one of the heart blocks and the flowers, and add light to the overall design.

The patchwork print and the ‘appliqued’ trees are so cool! This was the best way I found to showcase them – there was no way I was going to just hint at them in blocks made of smaller pieces!

The fabric pieces you will fuse have manageable sizes. I prefer to use the blanket stitch and matching 40 wt thread for the applique’. Yes, I have a sizeable ‘collection’ of threads and spools filled with them for this purpose!
If you like fused machine applique’ like I do, check out Coneflower Chain. It is one of my favorites! Remember also the butterfly quilt with batiks, Nature Lover, with a video tutorial showing how I fuse the pieces.
It is time to go back to work. I hope I have inspired you to get what you need (FABRICS, you need them!) to make these two projects. Download the patterns and get sewing!
