Christmas tree quilt pattern to make in one day

By Denise Russell

Here is a Christmas tree quilt pattern to display your favorite fabrics or to make as a scrappy quilt. Perfect as a wall hanging! I sprinkled it with stars and added the presents under the tree. No water required!

I have many large Christmas quilts and was looking for something I could hang on a wall or use as a throw. So, I designed the Tree of Joy Christmas quilt pattern. I finally got the binding done this weekend while listening to a book. Then, I left the house looking for a cool place to photograph it. I forgot to bring a companion to hold it, though…

I stopped two super nice ladies at the park and they promptly agreed to hold my Tree of Joy quilt for a quick photo shoot. I was so thankful! The quilts’ colors matched the Autumnal background very well, don’t you think?

The Tree of Joy pattern was just released and it is available at your local quilt store (they can call me for wholesale orders if they haven’t seen it yet) and from my Etsy store, PiecedBrain. It measures 51″ by 61″ and the blocks finish at 5″.

My version features the Not Ameowsed fabric collection by Dear Stella. I could not resist those moody cats and cool coordinating fabrics. I have had two cats – one who lived to be 18 years old and one who left us at 6 years of age. They were both amazing creatures… as long as we understood their moods and respected their privacy. Wait, isn’t that what we wish people would do in regard to us, too? Anyway…

These fabrics were perfect because I was looking for a variation of my favorite, traditional and beloved red and green fabrics for Christmas. The whimsical design and soft hues were exactly what I needed for this pattern.

I made this quilt in one day. The assembly of the blocks above can be expedited by sewing strip sets with the green and yellow strips for the center of the block, then chain piecing the top and bottom green square/white triangle units. That is how I made 33 of these blocks very quickly.

The instructions are very clear with lots of diagrams so you will know exactly what to do if you are a beginner quilt. Tree of Joy is an easy quilt pattern designed with beginner quilters in mind – the blocks are simple, their construction does not require any special techniques, and the project is manageable in a day or weekend.

One word of caution: do not select directional fabrics for this block, unless you are positive you can live with them appearing on the corners as they do on the block shown above. If you must, I suggest you change the fabrics for the corner triangles – the block will look differently but that may be better.

For the flying geese, use the No Waste method so the stars will also be fast to construct, even though we only need to put together 5 of them. I like it because the flying-geese units turn out perfectly every time.

Notice the contract between the star points and its center. Repeat that on your Christmas quilt to achieve the same effect as I did.

The fabric on the tree was my focus fabric. From it I selected the best coordinating fabrics for all the other blocks. Do the same for a harmonious look, even if you work with scraps.

The surprise in this easy quilt pattern was saved for the tree: large rectangles make up its center. Here, a directional fabric works well because it appears right side up on the center of the tree, and it is rotated only on the half-square triangle corners.

I love the quilting motif used by Melissa at Sew Shabby Quilting. It complements the modern look of the quilt and add amazing texture to it. If you would like to quilt it on your domestic machine, you may consider using the walking foot and quilting it on the ditch, or marking diagonal lines all across the quilt top and quilting it that way with the same presser foot.

The colors I chose for this Christmas tree quilt pattern give it a modern look, and the plaid on the border tie all the colors together. It can also be used as a lap quilt, so it is very flexible.

If you are looking for a pattern for a Christmas quilt, this one might work for you. The PDF can be downloaded today from PiecedBrain. In the meantime, I hope your day is as beautiful as the one we are having in Utah!
