Winter Cheer quilt as Block of the Month

By Denise Russell

Make this Winter Cheer quilt as Block of the Month using different fabrics from your stash, or use the amazing collections I did! It measures 81″ x 81″ and features fabrics from Riley Blake’s Winterberry and Merry and Bright collections.

Quilters with any skill level can enjoy this project, as The Quilting Company has developed videos to help with block assembly. The videos are well-produced, brief, and to the point, and are an indispensable resource as they will help with this project and are certain to become a great reference for future ones.

Tutorials of any type are great to develop our skills. I frequently create photo and video tutorials such as the Curved Paper Piecing, the border blocks for my Let’s Party quilt, or this Holiday decor.

When designing this quilt, I selected my very favorite quilt blocks and techniques, including machine applique’ – the best! The corner blocks and one of the borders feature easy-to-prepare and stitch applique’ shapes. I fused them and then used a blanket stitch to give the leaves, berries, and vines a beautiful finish.

When stitching down narrow pieces such as stems, I sometimes opt for straight stitching. It secures the shapes and lets me see the fabric I chose. A blanket stitch would totally cover the fabric.

It was so fun to decide which fabric to place in each block: together, the Winterberry and Merry and Bright collections provide a modern take on the traditional red and green Christmas quilts as they add a touch of pink, mint, black, and gray to our quilted projects. Here are some of the fabrics I used:

I have so many Christmas quilts. I love reds and greens together, but also have projects made with dark blue, white, and silver (such as a table runner that is all assembled and just needs quilting). Which colors do you like on your Christmas projects?

The Winter Cheer quilt as Block of the Month was available from Riley Blake through Pine Needles Online when it was first released. Contact them to see if they still have any available.

I, for one, am hoping I can receive the quilt back very soon so I can display it in my house. You know I ain’t waiting until Christmas!

Happy Quilting!
