Beginner quilt pattern: make this quilt in one day.

May 20, 2019 By Denise Russell

Are you looking for a beginner quilt pattern? I have just designed an easy one for you to make your first project in one day or in one weekend.

Beginner quilt pattern

“Camping Fun” is one of my newest patterns. It measures 58″ x 70″ and the blocks finish at 12″. Easy to make, these blocks are perfect for large prints or fabrics you love but do not want to cut into tiny pieces.

The quilt on the photo features fabrics from the “May the Forest be with You” collection by Dear Stella. Here are some of the fabrics I used:

They are so cute! That is why I chose a block with a large ‘canvas’ (square) in which to show them off. Speaking of squares, that is what you will cut, plus rectangles.

The easiest beginner quilt pattern, in my opinion, is the one made up of only squares and rectangles. As you can see on the photo above, you will breeze through this block and learn the basics as you go along.

Tools for quilters:

Rotary Cutter and blades – this is the one I use because it is easy to cut through a few layers of fabric with it.

Acrylic Rulers – I like four: the 4″ x 12″, the 6″ x 12″, the 6″ x 24″, and the 8.5″ x 24″. This set of Omnigrip rulers is on sale.

Cutting mat – I have the Olfa 24″ x 26″ and the Olfa 12″ x 18″ mats. I prefer mats with fewer lines on them so these are perfect.

Fabric scissors – this is one of the three I have!

Seam Ripper – You will be using them a lot (we all do!) so I would not buy an expensive one. I like this ripper because it is very comfortable.

Pins – I use two types: the skinny ones with a glass head and the extra long with the yellow head.

Pincushion – You can make your own (here is a fun pattern) or you can get the magnetic dish. I place the white-head pins in one dish and the yellow long pins in another.

Clips – Needed for holding the binding in place for hand sewing it. I prefer Clover Wonder Clips.

You will also need all these quilter supplies plus some for your sewing machine, sewing needles, and threads. As for threads, I only use Aurifil 50wt in white or beige for stitching and 40wt (colors that match the fabrics) for machine applique’. It is a good investment at the beginning, but you must have these tools. [These are all affiliate links.]

Once you get comfortable using the rotary cutter and a ruler, sewing with a precise 1/4″ seam, and nesting the seams so they all meet, you are then ready to go to blocks that involve the assembly of individual units such as half-square triangles (here is another method) and flying geese (my current preferred method is the No Waste Flying Geese – I will post a tutorial soon).

Denniele from Louanna Mary Quilt Design made the quilt for the Dear Stella booth at Quilt Market in Kansas City last week and I love how it turned out!

The quilting motif reminds me of clearings in the woods where we would set up camp. Just use the fabrics we did, or choose your favorite ones and quickly get the quilt done. With graduation season upon us, Camping Fun might just be the pattern you need.

You can find Camping Fun in my Etsy store PiecedBrain or at your favorite quilt store (my patterns are available for wholesale).

Enjoy your Monday!
