Placemats Tutorial

By Denise Russell

Here is what I am working on today – placemats using the Broderie Perse technique. I am loving them! Here is a quick tutorial:

I’ve had this beautiful fabric from Benartex for a while (no idea what is called!) but did not want to lose its beauty by cutting through it. So, I ironed fusible web to its back (I always use Heat’nBond Lite) and carefully cut around the designs I wanted using sharp scissors.

Then, I peeled the paper backing and played with the placement onto the background (using a few fat quarters by RJR Fabrics). Next, I fused the flowers and leaves according to the fusible web manufacturer’s instructions.

The designs on the left are right above where the silverware will be, so nothing will be hidden when placemats are used.

Finally, I stitched around the edge of all motifs using Aurifil monofilament thread, quilted, and bound them by machine (well, as I said, it is still a WIP so I am finishing them today).

This set is darling and will making a fun Christmas gift. Broderie Perse allows us to keep the entirety of fabric designs we love and, if your design does not include any piecing, it makes for a fast project.

What are you working on today?

I need some new placemats, but I'm not sure I will have time to make any! It was lovely to see yours though!
