Download these 2 free quilt patterns now and make these beginner projects that look complex but are a breeze to make! (And yes, last week’s giveaway winners are announced below!)
Mellow Yellow Quilt 1 is the first project I designed for Blank Quilting‘s Mellow Yellow collection. It measures 60″ x 72″ and the block size is 9″. The timeless appeal of this color palette makes this, and the next project, ideal for any home decor and perfect as gifts. The fabrics are to die for! Here are some of them:
The textures include paisleys, small and large florals, bees, dragonflies, and cool geometric motifs: a dream for quilt designers because we have lots to play with. The colors are cheerful and soothing at once, the prints would look great in any quilted project, and are ideal for garments as well. Mellow Yellow will be shipping to stores in November so ask your local quilt store if they are carrying the collection and mark your calendar.
Don’t worry: there is no curved sewing on this pattern as the petals are fused and machine appliqued to the background square. Quilt 1 is a very fast quilt to put together with simple cornerstone blocks. This block provides a wonderful opportunity to contrast textures and colors and I took full advantage of this attribute to display the many fabrics in the collection.
If you are a beginner quilter, click on this machine applique’ tutorial and you will learn everything you need for machine applique projects.
Speaking of machine applique’, check out Mellow Yellow Quilt 2: it looks super complex but the blocks are entirely fused and appliqued to the background squares. The shapes are traced onto plastic for template first, then onto the smooth side of the fusible web. Then, just cut the fusible web shapes and fuse them to the wrong side of each fabric. Quilt 2 measures 68″ x 81″ and the blocks are 12″.
Both these patterns have a cozy, scrappy look to them as if we were intent on raiding our fabric stash and selecting fabrics with this colorway, don’t you think? I know you are getting some ideas… so download these 2 free quilt patterns now and get started!
Because you will be making only one type of block, regardless of the quilt you choose, you can make any of these projects in a weekend. Just put the pieces together, fuse them in place, stitch around them, and done. As you know, there is no rule book for making quilt blocks and I remember this fact as I come up with new ways to put them together.
So, go to Blank Quilting’s website to download these two free quilt patterns and set aside one weekend to make one of them. How about calling some of your friends and making these projects together, even if gathering online is the best solution? A party is a party is a party…
Now, for last week’s giveaway. Here are the winners of the two prizes. I used the Research Randomizer and requested “2 Sets of 1 Unique Number” with a Range: From 1 to 19. Drum roll, please!

I have sweet memories of taking my sons to the pumpkin patch when they were little.
Congratulations to both of you! I forgot to ask you to include your email on the comment but I will find a way to contact you so I can mail the loot. I did want to include this announcement of winners in a post where I mentioned two free patterns because I really wanted all of you to win something!
I took this photo at a Coffee Shop in Guaruja’, Sao Paulo, Brazil, last month. It is a reminder that caffeine will be my fuel today as I have a ton of work to do. Whatever your fuel, load up and get going!
