Say Hello to Spring with the best floral quilt to welcome Spring with butterflies, dots, and daisies: a free quilt pattern to download and sew today!
I designed Quilt 1 for the gorgeous Whimsy Daisical collection by Keri Schneider for Blank Quilting. It is bright, bold, and beautiful! It measures 68″ x 88″ and the blocks finish at 9-1/2″. Twirl the blocks around and create exquisite flowers with butterflies, tiny daisies, and geometric shapes to finish a quilt that is sure to dazzle your friends.
This collection will be shipping to stores soon, just in time as you begin thinking of Spring decorations for your home and gifts for your loved ones.
These are just some of the fabrics I used. The design possibilities were plentiful and finally, I settled on blocks using simple paper piecing for the leaves and orange peels for the petals of my flowers. The palette that Keri chose was so fun to work with!
These prints are also wonderful as throw pillows to brighten your living room, sunroom, or porch. You can also pick your favorite one, cut a 36″ x 36″ square of it, add a 3″ inch border of a contrasting print, add batting and backing, quilt it, bind it, and… voila’: a fast table topper!
These modern fabrics look fantastic on my quilt design. The colorful daisies have me dreaming of the flowering season which is soon around the corner. You know I arrived in the US one week ago after spending two months in Brazil. Oh, I was surrounded by amazing tropical plants of every shape and color (go to my Instagram account @piecedbrain to see them). In their absence, I delight in Keri’s Whimsy Daisical collection…
Some of the blocks have a pink/white half-square triangle instead of a plain square on the corner. The pink, as well the tiny square on the sashing becomes the center of the secondary design.
The leaves are paper-pieced to offer beginners an opportunity to try out this technique with an easy project: pin the fabrics right sides together on the back of the template, flip the template, and stitch on the line between the two sections. No sweat! To help you, check out this video tutorial and you will see how fast you can learn it. Here is another tutorial to ensure you get it!
If you are a veteran of paper-piecing, you know right away this will be a breeze to make.
The free pattern for Quilt 1, the best floral quilt to welcome Spring in my biased opinion, has detailed instructions for construction and assembly of the Whimsy Daisical quilt. The orange peels (petals) are fused then machine appliqued using the blanket stitch, so no circle sewing.
Of course, you can applique’ the petals with any stitch you like. I am crazy about the blanket stitch and almost always use thread that matches the fabrics. This way, the emphasis is on the fabric and shape, not the thread. My Bernina 440 QE machine is amazing at this stitch (click here to see how I always get it to look so perfect).
Make the leaves, make the half-square triangles, fuse and applique’ all the petals, then put it all together – a great weekend project, particularly if you pick a snowy time for it: white outdoors, rainbow indoors – a cool combination!
I like to have things to look forward to and the arrival of the Whimsy Daisical collection for this fun floral quilt project is keeping me hopping. Yes, we are reminded every day to live in the present, but I can dream, can’t I?
