[Edited May 21, 2020.]

Let’s begin the week with a free quilt pattern! This fun geometric quilt design features the Geo-Topia line by Color Principle for Henry Glass. Quilt 1, as it is called, measures 63-1/2″ x 78″ and the blocks finish at 15-1/2″.

A wall hanging showcasing four blocks would look fantastic! Add the borders and you will have a unique textile artwork for the family room or office.

The blocks are paper pieced in four sections, but you can see how easy the shapes are. It is a perfect project for a beginner paper piecing quilter because the blocks are very large. After this project, he or she can then move on to projects involving smaller sections and fabric patches.

After trying a bunch of different foundation papers, I have chosen to stick with tracing paper. It is transparent enough so I can easily transfer the templates onto it, it is sturdy enough if I need to rip stitches, and it is easy to remove once the blocks are stitched together.

I have a few paper piecing tutorials to help you: click here for a cool border block, here for tulips, and, finally, check out the curved paper piecing tutorial.

Take a look at some of the prints in the Geo-Topia collection:

Those colors!!! The prints are amazing for modern quilts and I think they are super cool as backing fabrics, too. I am thinking I would like to use them in a design where the background is all black or charcoal, with squares of each of the prints floating about.

They also make great borders for quilts featuring blocks with solid colors as the geometric prints and bright colors could tie the design together. Anyway, the possibilities are endless. If you have a monochromatic room that needs pops of color, consider making pillows with your favorite print of the Geo-Topia collection.

I used solids from the Modern Melody line by Henry Glass to provide a resting place for the eyes, as well as to emphasize the amazing prints. The prints and the solids complement one another very well. There is a burst of texture everywhere you look, making this a very happy quilt.

Download the Geo-Topia Quilt 1 free pattern from the Henry Glass website. While you are there, check out the other free projects they offer – I am sure you will find something you can make for the upcoming Holiday Season. I like free quilt patterns and I like modern…

The Geo-Topia collection is already shipping to quilt stores. Ask your favorite local shop to get the fabrics for you and get sewing!

If you would like more free modern quilt patterns, particularly free quilt patterns for modern patchwork, check out JotDot Quilt 1 (easy machine applique’ project) and the Dolly quilt (fun blocks and fabrics).

I hope these free projects brighten your Monday!
