Black and White pattern for a modern quilt

By Denise Russell

Free quilt pattern alert! Nothing like a black and white quilt to add a contemporary flair to your home decor. This Black and White pattern has a scrappy look to it – even better!

[Edited: June 18, 2020]

Black and White pattern

This is the quilt I designed for the Domino Effect collection by Blank Quilting. It measures 61″ x 71″ and the blocks finish at 10″. I love this black and white quilt with its scrappy look which can easily be achieved due to the variety of prints in this collection.

This collection has amazing textures in every fabric, adding lots of interest and depth to the project through the two quilt blocks I chose.

The blocks are fun to machine piece and not special techniques were used. I like the contrast between the straight lines of one block and the ‘curved’ lines of the other. You could add that splash of color from the narrow border to the center of the top block if you want more movement on the design.

Although I designed this as a Black and White pattern, you can make this quilt blue and white, red and white, with the top block all one color (in different prints) and the bottom block another… This free quilt pattern is one that you will probable use many times, and always with a unique result as you customize it and make it your own.

Here are some of the fabrics I used in the quilt along with white and purple on one of the borders:

Imagine the possibilities!!! I can see these fabrics made into pillows – one print on each side and a fun pop of color on the binding. They each contribute whimsy and fun to the quilt, with the perfect mix of dark, medium, and light values creating the contrast that allows each block to shine.

If you like black and white quilts, check out this other free pattern that I designed for Michael Miller Fabrics. It is easy, it has a splash of color, and it is also perfect for scraps!

The Domino Effect collection is shipping now so look for it at your favorite quilt store. You can download this quilt pattern by going to the Blank Quilting website and clicking on the Free Projects tab.
