Yeah… No girl’s room in my house to display the banner, so this is the best I could do on a gray day! Some of you have asked me for a tutorial and I finally got it done. You can change the colors of the fabrics and the ric-rac if decorating a boy’s room, and instead of butterflies you can use a ball, an animal, a car…
This banner can also be made for Easter or other holiday seasons. Get creative and get sewing!
You will need:
3 fat quarters – 2 prints and one solid, or assorted colors if desired
2 yards of medium white ric-rac (or color that goes with your fabrics)
Fusible web (I only use HeatnBond Lite. Period)
Thread for applique’ (I used Aurifil 50wt this time – added delicate touch to the applique’)
Marking pen
Instead of fat quarters, you can use any scraps you may have (right… who doesn’t have TONS of scrap fabrics???).
Fold up about 5-1/5″ of fat quarter with RST as the triangle is 5″ high (for triangle template click here) and pin. Mark triangles, alternating its direction so you can make good use of your fabric. Outline 5 triangles on each of two fat quarters, or the fabrics you will be using to make the banner, for a total of 10 triangles.
Stitch on the outlined lines, leaving a 2″ opening at the base of each triangle. Cut triangles about 1/8″ from the stitching lines. Press to set seams.
Turn triangles inside out and press them again.
Topstitch triangles, tucking in the seam to close the opening at the same time. Now they are ready for the butterfly applique.
Trace butterflies onto smooth side of HeatnBond Lite. Iron it to the back of the fabric you are using for the applique, cut out the shapes, peel backing and iron them onto triangles (for more details on how to work with HeatnBond Lite, click here). Machine applique using blanket stitch. [Oops… forgot to prepare a template for the butterfly! I will update this post later with the template. In the meantime, you can use any simple butterfly shape you can find.]
Pin each triangle to the back of ric-rac, spacing them 2″ apart from one another. Stitch them with thread that matches the ric-rac color, and the banner is ready!
Lots of possibilities for adaptation here. It makes a great gift for a baby shower and other occasions. Fast to put together, too, so remember this idea for those last minute gifts!
