Use a package of 10″ squares on this fun Layer Cake-friendly quilt pattern. Beginner quilters will love how easy and fast it is to finish!

My High Frequency quilt is ready! It measures 56″ x 64″ and the blocks finish at 8″. I made it using one package of 10″ squares of Kaffe Fasset Collective Classic Spots by FreeSpirit Fabrics, an accent fabric, and background fabric! I love its playful and colorful vibe, don’t you?
I chose not to add borders because I wanted to focus on the quilt design. Should you wish to make a larger version of High Frequency, add borders: for a simpler look, add a 4″ or 5″ border with background fabric. Otherwise, choose a print carefully so as not to overshadow the center of the quilt.
Due to the sharply geometric design, I suggest you lean toward more modern fabrics or solids for the blocks. Novelty fabrics (small print motifs) would also work. How about making High Frequency with low-volume fabrics and a dark background? It would look fantastic!
You can also add more blocks – use two layer cakes to make a king-size quilt! I need a flannel quilt for my bed and have a huge package of 10″ flannel squares. Yes!
Denise Cornett from Southern Quilts chose a quilting pattern with circles to match the dots of the fabrics-perfection! The accent fabric (from my stash!) in the small rectangles has smaller dots. Although I named it High Frequency because of the waves formed by the rows, I refer to this quilt as my ‘dotty’ quilt because of the fabrics!
You will use every single 10″ square on the package except for a thin strip of each one. For the background fabric, select a contrasting color to ensure the design pops. It may be a print that reads as a solid fabric, or a fabric with texture. Regardless, contrast is key here.
Would you believe I found a backing with circles and dots? This 108″-wide print is by Wilmington Prints. How fun it is when I don’t have to piece the backing of the quilt – it is finished that much faster.
I confess: piecing quilt backing is not my favorite thing to do. Give me 10 quilts to bind, but piece the backing for me! I have done it, and they looked fine, but I want to spend most of my time piecing the top. By the time the top is done, I want to make one seam if I must when putting the backing together, and that’s that.
This layer cake-friendly quilt pattern is ready for you to download from my Etsy Store. If you do not have a layer-cake package (what are the chances…), cut (42) 10″ squares of assorted prints or solid fabrics. Directional fabrics would not do here, not even as an accent fabric, except for stripes or other prints that look OK upside down. I can’t wait to see which fabrics you will choose!
I am on a precut-quilt-design kick. My last pattern, Play Ball, is made with jelly rolls. It has been a huge success! So, stay tuned for more patterns with precuts! Until then,
