Download this free pattern for a black-and-white modern quilt with a cool geometric design and just enough color to interest you. It’s easy to make!
I designed “Geo Surprise” for the Back in Black collection by Goldi L. Studio for Henry Glass Fabrics a little while ago and forgot to write a post about this free pattern! The quilt measures 56” x 64” and the blocks finish at 8″. Here is the surprise: although the image above does not show it, there are many different black fabrics on the blocks!
In Geo Surprise, I featured six of the sixteen prints in the collection (two of my favorites are below). I would love to have a bolt of each print because Back in Black is the NEW BLACK for me! This design could be remade in other colors for a more playful effect. However, black and white are a dramatic pair and will not clash with any items in your room decor.
True, it is known that artwork does not necessarily have to match anything in home decor, but for those of us who love a more harmonious environment in terms of color…
Ferns and sunflowers, stars, diamonds, cupcakes, flamingos, snowflakes… Many more motifs are softly imprinted on black, creating interesting, whimsical, textured backgrounds to quilt blocks. The faint prints remove the harshness of black and add a dreamy note to any project: quilts, garments, wall art, or accessories.
The blocks I chose for this black-and-white modern quilt are very simple to make. I worked with White from the Folio Basics collection by Color Principle for Henry Glass to emphasize each black print on this modified log cabin.
Block orientation forms the geometric design – turn it this way and that from row to row for a secondary treat: a downward starway to… the offset medallion!
The medallion was created with 4 of these blocks. Here, Soft Blue and Yellow from the Timeless Linen Basics by Stacy West for Henry Glass add the pop of color I wanted to create a focal point and break the expected downward lines. This reminds me of one of my black and white patterns, All Roads Lead to Rome (you can get it here), where I also added a pop of color to direct your eyes to a specific place.
Above are the two other patterns I designed for this collection, this time featuring its only colorful print, which I love. Aren’t the colors vibrant and happy? In Tossed Nature, notice how I used the print as a panel in the center and later as a border, with some black prints from the Back to Black collection and a few carefully chosen Timeless Linen Basic colors on the narrow borders. Remember this design idea if you have a print in your stash that you cannot cut into!
In Twist, the basic fabrics are the main feature of the quilt, although the print occupies a prominent place on the wide border. Just like that, you get three free patterns to download and sew, compliments of Henry Glass Fabrics. Cool, right?
I am off to design more quilts and write patterns. Stay tuned!
