Fall leaves become an easy panel quilt

By Denise Russell

The snowplows have been working all night to clear the roads of the many inches of snow we got. The sky is still melting into white powdery stuff, but I have other colors on my mind right now because of the fall leaves easy panel quilt pattern I have just released.

Fall leaves panel quilt

“State of Mind” is the name of this fall quilt pattern and I am in love! The panel is from the Nature Narratives collection by Hoffman Fabrics, which will be in quilt stores this coming April. It features my favorite season of the year in all its splendor. The crisp leaves with warm colors seem to beckon me to step onto them. I can even hear the crunching sound they will make under my boots.

The challenge I posed myself was this: how to guarantee that my beloved fall leaves become an easy panel quilt. No complicated blocks on the borders, no tricky techniques – just the plain beauty of the fabrics. The panel is called S4719-329 Brooke and measures 30-1/4″ x 43″. However, for this pattern, it is trimmed down so the entire quilt measures 53″ x 65″.

I wanted your focus to zero in on the fall picture at the center, so I added simple horizontal borders to frame the artwork. The fabric with the pines has fantastic hues and texture, so I had to include it in this project.

The light green I chose for the narrow border provided a fun contrast to the saturated, darker colors and I think it worked well, don’t you? But, where did I get the idea for the light green?

I used another panel from the same Hoffman Fabrics collection (above) for fall leaves on the “State of Mind” pattern. The medium size and the wider borders were cut from it and that is where I found the idea for the light green narrow borders.

As you cut the border strips from this panel, you will add more colors to the quilt center than I show on my photo, and that will look fabulous!

If you like fall quilts as much as I do, check out this post and this other post with a Fall quilt. Large and small, it does not matter, as long as they say: Autumn is here!

You can get the “State of Mind” pattern in my Etsy shop, PiecedBrain, or at your local quilt store. If they don’t carry it yet, they can contact me for wholesale inquiries.

So, despite the many shades of white, brown, and gray I spy from my window, this is my current State of Mind. Have a fantastic Monday!
