This year's Home Machine Quilting Show in Sandy, Utah, was held from May 10-12. My mom and my sister, visiting from Brazil to attend Michael's wedding, had never been to a quilt show before. Although we were busy with preparations for the wedding, we managed to spare a couple of hours to visit the show. What a treat! We saw wonderful works of art of various styles, sizes, and techniques. The vendors area was full of new and interesting tools, amazing fabrics, and cool gadgets. At some point, we … [Read more...] about Home Machine Quilting Show

Machine quilting without Stitch Regulator
Finally decided to quilt a top I made in 2009 during our quilt retreat. For a change, I am quilting it using the darning foot instead of the stitch regulator. I am having a blast! I am marking it as I go along, using a stencil and the FriXion pen. As soon as I am done quilting the block, I iron it so the pen marks will disappear. It is turning out so nice! How about you, girls, quilting anything lately? … [Read more...] about Machine quilting without Stitch Regulator
Machine quilting class
I can't wait to see the projects my quilting friends will quilt using their own sewing machine! Isn't it amazing what you can do with the walking foot, beside straight lines? And... free-motion is not that scary anymore, is it? I love teaching... particularly to a group of enthusiastic friends! Too bad I left my camera home! :-( Now I need to make the transition from thinking about all the fun we had today, to what I will cook for dinner... Quilt sandwich, anyone? … [Read more...] about Machine quilting class
Machine quilting with Walking Foot
There is so much quilting one can do with the walking foot. Look at the table runner to the right. However, the pattern landed itself to SITD with the walking foot quite nicely, and the results were great - as you can tell from the back of the runner. Just remember to always have monofilament as top thread when stitching in the ditch, so if you go off … [Read more...] about Machine quilting with Walking Foot
Showcasing inspiration fabrics
If you have a fabric you really love but do not want to use it in a complicated pattern where its beauty may be overshadowed by other fabrics, or its motif cut into small pieces, try the pattern I used on the quilt pictured here. Simple rectangles surrounded by alternating borders, with the inspiration fabric used as border also. I wasted a bit of fabric when I was fussy cutting the borders as I wanted to show the beautiful teal leaves. I did not heavily quilt it, resulting in a much softer lap … [Read more...] about Showcasing inspiration fabrics
Quilting after applique
When you quilt around the applique in your block, whether you machine or hand applique, it makes the design stand out. I free motion around it slowly and with small stitches. I use the same process when I quilt panels. It enhances the design and turns a wall hanging into something more special, since I usually use a panel when I do not have much time for piecing. A few borders and you are done. I do, however, spend more time on the quilting part of the project, and the results are wonderful. … [Read more...] about Quilting after applique
