I designed Blessed Bounty for the Late Summer Harvest collection by Blank Quilting a little while ago. The collection will be available in April 2024, yet I thought it would be cool to alert you to it right now so you can ask your local quilt store to carry it. I love the prints in this collection and I think you will love it, too!
Blessed Bounty measures 71-1/4″ x 71-1/4″ and the blocks finish at 10-1/4″. This quilt is perfect for beginner sewists because the only block to make is the hourglass one! The print squares are from the block panel in the collection.
The Late Summer Collection has old cars, bales of hay, bees, beehives, and lots of pumpkins and gorgeous Fall colors. Look at the fabric on the border! I included a narrow border to showcase the fun plaid. I placed the bees on the binding where I could have used a solid fabric. More fun!
Those colors are so beautiful! The sky blue pumpkins in that allover print was so pretty I decided to repeat it in the block. Then, by creating another block with two sides of the darker print, I was able to create a cool design as I rotated and carefully placed them around the panel blocks.
That design appeared because of the amount of contrast between the fabrics I chose. It is likely that you will make a few of these quilts. If you choose other fabrics for them, be sure to select fabrics with the same contrast, or the design will disappear in the midst of same-value prints…
The background needed to be very light for me. Yes, there is beauty in dark quilts, but when you want to call attention to motifs you like and the prints have lots of dark colors, one useful tip is to work with a very light fabric, matching the tone of the main fabrics – if cool colors on prints, cool background; conversely, warm colors go well with a warm background.
For Blessed Bounty, I used Ivory and Green Tea from the Chameleon Basics collection from Blank Quilting on the background and cornerstones.
This is the block panel I used in the Blessed Bounty quilt. I picked a simple block to ensure the lovely motifs did not get lost in the midst of complicated piecing. I see it in other quilts, but my preference when using panels of any size is to surround them with fabrics or blocks that will make them pop not disappear.
I did mention I had free patterns for Thanksgiving quilts, so here is the second quilt I designed for this collection:
Sweet Autumn measures 56″ x 44″ and the blocks finish at 4″. Here is proof that I really liked that pumpkin print! In fact, as I am writing this blog post the sun is rising and the horizon has the Sky Blue and Orange colors of this fabric. Super cool! In addition to the Late Summer Harvest collection, for Sweet Autumn I worked with the Verona Basics – it has a terrific texture and rich colors that work well with Late Summer Harvest.
The bales of hay added an unexpected texture border around the panel, adding light to the design and providing a good transition to the pieced border.
I rotated the hourglass blocks this and that way for a ‘tossed look’ on that border but… there was a method to my craziness. I wanted the plaid fabric to be touching the bales of hay because it was the lightest fabric, pushing the dark fabrics away from the center where the only dark thing I wanted was the panel. The secret is out!
I had fun choosing the fabrics for the corner bouquets. The flower blocks are very easy to put together, making this another easy quilt for beginners. The fact that they measure 4.5″ unfinished does not mean they are difficult to manage – the construction is simple and requires no special skills or techniques. It is all very detailed in the pattern.
Here is what this block looks like with different fabrics:
Stitch and flip, that is all you will do! Even for the stem. It required a little math on my end, but on yours, it will be just sewing fun. I want to make a whole quilt with this block… with batiks… and soon!
So, these are my Free patterns for Thanksgiving quilts for this week.
