Let’s end the month of March with 2 super cool and free quilt patterns to download and begin sewing right away because we must stay busy so our minds won’t wonder about sad stuff.
Holiday Retreat is the quilt I designed for Moda Fabrics’ Forest Frost Glitter collection. It measures 82″ x 94″ and the blocks finish at 12″ and 6″. The techniques include easy piecing, machine applique’, and easy paper piecing.
You’ve asked me before which one I prefer: foundation paper or tracing paper. I have used both extensively because I love paper piecing. However, tracing paper has become my go-to supply for this technique, unless I want to print the templates from my printer, in which case the foundation paper will work better.
Yes, I do trace lots of templates on the tracing paper… I usually have an Audible book playing on my headphones when I do repetitive tasks and so, I do not mind them. Also, even though the shape may have straight lines, such as the trees on the border of Holiday Retreat above, often I will not use a ruler! As long as I trace the line well, I can make any line straight when I am stitching it.
I am in love with the Forest Frost Glitter collection. Check out some of the fabrics I used:
Aren’t they dreamy and perfect for Winter? The glitter added to the prints is reminiscent of brilliant snowflakes under the sun rays or the moonlight! I thought of the things we like to do and see during the winter months and put them all in the design as simple applique’ shapes.
The crisscross secondary design emphasizes the applique’ blocks. The trees on the border, alternating large and small, add movement and whimsy. Can you tell I really had fun designing it? The fabrics inspired me…
I am so blessed to be able to design quilts for these gorgeous prints. Moda Fabrics have long been my most beloved fabrics and I am delighted to work with them!
Suppose you are more in the mood for Summer. In that case, here is Kula Gardens designed with Maui Batiks by Moda Fabrics. It measures 71″ x 83″ and the blocks finish at 12″ and 4″. Super fun and features machine applique’ flowers in bright colors. The textures of these batiks are so beautiful!
Batiks hold a special place in my heart. When I saw this collection I recalled my many trips to Hawaii. The bright sun, the blues and greens of the ocean, and the colorful Hibiscus found everywhere were on my mind and now I can have them near me year-round with the Kula Gardens quilt.
Machine applique’ is very versatile and quick so it appears time and again on my designs. If you are new to it, check out this quick post for great stitches, and this post about the Nature Lover quilt I designed which shows how I machine applique’ with a tutorial. That is one of the reasons why I called these 2 free quilt patterns to download super cool: they are fast to make.
Speaking of freebies, don’t think I forgot that today I must announce the winner of the Fabric Giveaway of last week. Thank you to all who participated and for mentioning your favorite songs (I am going down the list and listening to all of them). Here is the winner:
