Autumn quilt: ready for Fall with style

By Denise Russell

By now you must have guessed that Fall is my favorite season. Thus, I have made many quilted projects with those amazing colors. Here is another Autumn quilt so you can be ready for fall in style!

“Autumn Picnic” is my newest quilt design with my all-time favorite color combination for Fall, featuring fabrics from the Can’t Stop Falling collection by Hoffman Fabrics. The quilt measures 66-1/2″ x 90-1/2″ and the blocks finish at 12″. I love how it turned out!

The quilt size is great for a lap quilt or a twin bed. Of course, I prefer to have it draped over the couch in the family room so everyone can enjoy its beauty and warmth.

In every inch of these prints, you will find reminders of Autumn with acorns, leaves in all shapes, flowers, and berries in rich hues. The surprise for me is how much I have enjoyed the Teal mixed with the other more traditional colors in projects for this season. It lends the quilt a more modern charm, don’t you think?

The pinwheel and leaf blocks showcase the traditional colors of Fall and the teal on the chain blocks and on the border say: I am the NEW traditional!

They are easy to piece and require only beginner skills. This was done on purpose as I wanted to create a project that was easy enough for novice quilters, yet interesting for the veteran ones with its fun colorway, the chain block – a favorite with quilters of all levels, and the use of the perennial leaf block.

The movement of leaves and pinwheels remind us of the windy days of the season, the cool air letting us know that soon the landscape will change into a less colorful, yet still beautiful, palette. However, with this quilt in your home Autumn can last forever!

My collection of Autumn quilts keeps growing… Autumn Picnic joints Autumn Trails, my Wedding Rings one, and this mini, just as a sample of what I have made… I have three sons so they will each get a few. My oldest has claimed the mini quilt. I love gifting what I make and seeing the recipients put all quilts to good use: let the cats sit on them, drag them to the park, or keep them in the car for drives during cold days. Just use them!

You can find “Autumn Picnic “in the October 2019 issue of American Patchwork & Quilting magazine which goes on sale August 2nd. This issue has amazing projects (look at that one on the cover!) so be ready to grab your copy and start making them.

I am peeking outside my office window and see one single yellow leaf on the highest branch of the tree. And just like that, I feel a little cooler already.

Enjoy your day,

Hi, I love this quilt too, but also having difficulty finding the rust, gold and green prints, are they from a different line of Hoffman fabrics? Thanks!
