Bella Skill Builder 7

By Denise Russell

This is month 7 of the Bella Skill Builder Sew Along hosted by Fat Quarter Shop. I have a pretty nice pile of blocks which will soon become a cool, colorful quilt. Here are the blocks I made for today:

Block 7a  measures 24-1/2″ square, It was easy but touch and go for a while: I thought I had made a mistake, remade the patches only to find out they were OK all along.

I cut all HSTs for block 7a as above. Thinking I needed 4 HSTs from each set of squares (not 8 as the pattern calls for), I panicked and started all over again. After I had cut all the squares again, I read the pattern more carefully. Dang, I could have just made two more cuts and be done with them. Anyway, I may have to order more fabric after this exercise. On the plus side, I have extra HSTs for a future project. Ai ai ai…

Block 7b measures 20-1/2″ square and was also easy. The points seem to be matching all right, so these will definitely be included in the final layout.

This month we worked with the Creative Grids Half Square 4-in-1 Triangle Ruler #CGRBH1 to trim the HSTs:

It was a very effective way to trim them – another useful tool in my ‘shed’ as I can adapt leftover HSTs from previous projects (ahem) to fit other blocks by quickly trimming them to the new size. Just align with the seam the dashed line on the ruler with the final size you want for the HST (in this case, 4″),  and cut.

Head over to Fat Quarter shop’s blog where you will find the pattern and a video, plus have a chance to see how the blocks from the other participating bloggers are coming along. Their color schemes are wonderful and so different than mine. You can always hop into this Sew Along and catch up with us.

Happy sewing day!
