I found these beauties at Serendipity in Dagsboro, DE: Home of Christmas, by Stof. Rich shades of cream, grey, rusty brown, with golden outlines and dots… I am seriously considering another trip to the store to purchase more fabric!
I am often reminded of the question which plagues most quilters, particularly beginners: How much should I buy of each fabric when I don’t have a project in mind for them yet?
During the early years of my fabric addiction, I used to buy a minimum of 2 yards of any fabric I liked. Nowadays, I purchase one yard of an inspiration fabric, and half yard of those I know I will use on the same project. Or half yard of all the fabrics I like if no inspirational fabric is considered.
I do not purchase fabric for borders or binding at that time, as once pieced into a quilt top the resulting combination may require a different color altogether for borders. The backing, as well, does not enter into the equation until the top is finished. This allows me to add fabrics from other lines, styles, and collections. As long as it pleases my eyes, I am not afraid to work with an eclectic palette.
How about you? Do you stick to a particular style or type of fabric for each project, or do you mix it all up?
